The body size was familiar because of the baritone experience. Because of my smaller frame, extended playing sessions with the larger body is more fatiguing compared to my FS, but not a huge problem. (I need regular breaks anyway!) I expected very rich, resonant lows and the jumbo delivered. The two songs I recorded were both in dropped tuning (DADGAD) and the lows were warm, rich and very articulate. As usual, mids and highs were in great balance and the overall sonic quality of the jumbo had the expected Petros “DNA.” My experience with the jumbo in the studio was very positive. We used the usual Neumann stereo pair and a Neumann large diaphragm a few feet out for the ambient sound. Great combination. EQ was pretty straightforward with some reverb.
Though it’s stouter in size, the jumbo is definitely a fingerstyle instrument that responds exceptionally to both a lighter touch and a more aggressive style. The rosewood/sitka combination is pleasing, but of course leaves me wondering about the potential of your other wood combinations. Players who specialize in the percussive style and are inspired by the work of Michael Hedges, Eric Roche, Preston Reed, Andy McKee, etc., will find the jumbo to be an excellent fit. However, for slower tempo fingerstyle material that requires a lighter, more nuanced touch, I believe the jumbo combines the required responsiveness with the bonus of an authoritative voice that sets it apart from the FS, GC and even the D (though I don’t have much experience with the D).
Overall, the jumbo is an exceptional instrument that inspires new music, new approaches and experimentation. Combined with the fantastic neck profile, it’s another winner. Thanks for the opportunity to play it and record with it. I’m sure it would deliver the goods in a live setting.
Talk to you soon,
Tim
